Gareth has been coming to club since he was a little 8 year old busy body who got up everyone’s noses because he was so hyperactive and wanted to get involved and help with everything. He would often go up as a backseat passanger with Ken and others and fall asleep, high up above the mountains. He just could not wait until he was old enough so that he could also learn to fly. When he turned 13, that day had eventually arrived. Ken had special lead weights made for him so that he could sit in the front seat of the glider. Gareth took every oppoturnity that was made availabe to him to get into the glider to learn to fly. Many tried to trick him and get him lost to no avail.
Due to Gareth changing schools he has less time to get to the club so every holiday or mid-term break he would ensure that he got to the club to fly. By December 2013 he was just about ready but due to safety concerns, the instructors felt he needed a bit more time to become proficient. The day finally came, Billy took him up twice on Saturday morning and then Gareth called Ken to come and fly with him. Ken was a little hesitant as he knew that the next flight was going to be Gareth’s first SOLO flight. Eventually Billy tapped Gareth on the shoulder and said : “Off you go Gareth – you are on your own now!” And so a solo star was born.
